CHARLOTTE -- Back home for the first time since moving to Washington to become transportation secretary, Anthony Foxx offered advice Saturday to hundreds of new college graduates.
"Don't stop learning, and perhaps more importantly, don't forget your common sense," the former Charlotte mayor said to graduates from the University of Phoenix. "I'm very proud to say today that among your graduates of the class of 2013 is my own mother."
Foxx's mother, Laura, received a doctoral degree decades after she pushed her son to work hard, even through adversity.
"That kind of perseverance, perhaps more important than the degree, has taught you what you're capable of," Foxx said.
Foxx's message resonated with graduates.
"I think it was great advice, especially about the common sense and to never give up on your education," said Crystal Francesconi, who received a bachelor's degree. "I never thought I'd have the opportunity to go to college. I grew up in foster care, so to have the opportunity to make it this far means a lot."
Other grads said Foxx's family connection hit home because of the support their own relatives offered.
"It's exciting,? said graduate Wanda Galloway. ?It's a joy, and that's been my rock."
Foxx challenged the graduates to put their families first in order to be successful.
