2013 Laborfest, Labor Day parade canceled

There will be no Laborfest or Labor Day parade this year.

Laborfest, which had been scheduled for Sept. 2, is the signature event for the Milwaukee Area Labor Council AFL-CIO. It had been held for years and included the Labor Day parade to Maier Festival Park.

President Barack Obama made an appearance at Laborfest in 2010.

Sheila Cochran, secretary-treasurer and chief operating officer for the labor council, said because of staff changes at her office, it was decided not to put on the festival and parade.

"We're just regrouping," she said. "Our staff isn't as large as it was. The festival is a pretty big undertaking."

Cochran said she could not say for sure that the festival and parade would return next year.

"But I am pretty certain it will," she said.

Cochran said the cancellation of Laborfest and the parade had nothing to do with the loss of membership labor unions had experienced locally and throughout the state. There is still a strong labor movement in the state, she said.

Sue Landry, vice president and chief financial officer for Milwaukee World Festival, said it was the decision of Laborfest's organizers to cancel the event this year.

Landry said in an email that Maier Festival Park was available for Laborfest this year.

"We hosted both the Harley-Davidson anniversary and Laborfest on Labor Day weekends in the past," Landry wrote.

This year, Harley-Davidson is hosting its 110th anniversary on the festival grounds from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1. That event ends one day before Laborfest was scheduled to be held.
