Chilly (or Chili) Anyone? Warm Up with Crock-Pot's Official Recipes ...

crockpotappThere is, without question, something a little magical about slow cookers. You put your ingredients in and ? boom ? dinner. That?s especially true during the cold winter months when soups and stews are tempting.

Arguably the biggest name in the world of slow cookers, CROCK-POT has recently joined the ever-growing number of iPad recipe apps with CROCK-POT? Recipes?OFFICIAL APP for the CROCK-POT? Slow Cooker.

Despite it?s lengthy title, with it?s belt and suspenders approach to trademark protection, Crock-Pot?s app offers a direct, no-nonsense approach to getting dinner on the table. And, with the Superbowl on tap this Sunday, Crock-Pot?s app may help feed a crowd of hungry football fans.

Crock-Pot?s app includes 250 recipes, with free updates promised each month. The app allows the user to sort the recipes in a variety of different ways, as well as to peruse all the recipes at once.

crockpot1??crockpot2

The app?s UI helps simplify recipe preparation. It also offers a voice command option should the user wish to avoid touching the iPad while cooking. The user can save favorites to the recipe box, share recipes with friends, and print recipes with Air-Play. There?s also a shopping list module, as well as a notes section, which helps keep the user organized.

Tap the info button in the upper-right corner to access the shopping list and timers, as well as reference information such as conversions and substitutions similar to what users may find in a printed cookbook.

When I reviewed Not Your Mother?s Slow Cooker for iPad last August, I was impressed by the app, but felt it hogged too much of my iPad?s storage and it lacked a search function. At just 12.5 MB, Crock-Pot?s app is small enough to squeeze onto any crowded iPad, and includes search capabilities, and offers more than double the number of recipes. Crock-Pot?s app is, however, much less innovative that NYMSC. Fans of one app will likely find little use for the other, but it?s nice to have a choice.

Download Crock-Pot?s Official iPad app from the App Store for $3.99. This universal app offers additional recipe packs through in-app purchase.

What I liked: The ?top rated? filter offers the user a way to quickly see the app?s best offerings, and the list of 49 dishes included many entrees that benefit from a slow cooker including pulled pork, sloppy joes, beef stew, and a variety of casseroles. The app also allows the user to add her own recipes, which makes it possible to keep all of ones slow cooker recipes in the same place.

What I didn?t like: The ?stir? function strikes me as silly. These recipes are functional, but there?s so little variety that each attempt to shuffle the recipes yielded very similar results: soup, stew, roasted meat. Also, there is only one how-to video, so I?m not sure why this section was included. ?Perhaps it will be updated in the future.

To buy or not to buy: The app?s simplicity makes it a great choice for novice cooks, but anyone on a restricted diet may find fewer choices. Much like the slow cooker whose name it shares, Crock-Pot?s recipes cater to fans of hearty meat and potatoes or heavier mixed dishes with traditional ingredients.

Sometimes conflicts in critiques, insecurity, or emotions of unfair treatment could lead to these issues.

Many modern day beliefs with regard to anger management lean toward the premise of living in the moment.

Once we?realize?that we in reality have very little or no power over other people?s thoughts and ideas, we can start to liberate ourselves and take responsibly for our own anger management triggers.

The major mistake that people make whenever they process ridicule is that they believe the criticism to be a personal attack and thus they tend to take it personally. An effective anger management technique lies in seeing criticism constructively.

For instance, your spouse might complain that they don?t receive enough attention from you. Rather than pondering it as a personal attack, a very good anger management method will focus on this conduct specifically and not be offended by a personal attack.

By removing ourselves emotionally from criticism, we can commence to cultivate an perspective toward change that is balanced and can lead to less episodes of inappropriate anger. We have developed the process sound far too effortless, understandably.

Ryan says GOP needs to pick its fights with Obama

(AP) ? Rep. Paul Ryan said Saturday that Republicans need to stick together and pick their fights during President Barack Obama's second term, rejecting some White House proposals outright and trying to infuse others with conservative principles.

In a speech to conservatives, the GOP's 2012 vice presidential nominee said Obama would attempt to divide Republicans but urged them to avoid internal squabbles after a second straight presidential loss.

"We can't get rattled. We won't play the villain in his morality plays. We have to stay united," Ryan said at the National Review Institute's weekend conference on the future of conservatism. "We have to show that if given the chance, we can govern. We have better ideas."

The Wisconsin congressman outlined a pragmatic approach for a party dealing with last November's election defeats and trying to determine whether to oppose Obama's agenda at every turn or shape his proposals with conservative principles.

How the party moves forward was a major theme of the three-day meeting of conservative activists who also heard from Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. Govs. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Bob McDonnell of Virginia were scheduled to address the conference on Sunday.

The theme also dominated the Republican National Committee's winter meeting, which ended Friday in Charlotte, N.C.

With a surging minority population altering the electorate, Republican leaders have discussed the need to attract more women and Hispanics while at the same time standing firm on the values that unite conservatives. Republicans said despite the losses, the party could return to power by projecting optimism and attracting new voters with a message of economic opportunity.

Walker, a star among conservatives after surviving a union-led campaign to recall him from office, said government needed "brown-bag common sense," a reference to his frugal practice of packing his own lunch of ham-and-cheese sandwiches every day. Qualities like optimism, staying relevant to voters and showing courage in tackling big problems would be rewarded at the voting booth, he said.

"We've got to learn to be more optimistic. We've got to learn to give a viable alternative to the voters," Walker said.

Cruz said Republicans needed to use upcoming fights over the budget and the deficit as "leverage points" to tame long-term spending and debt. Projecting an upbeat outlook for the party, he said Obama's policies would drive many voters to Republicans just as many Americans turned to Ronald Reagan after the economic turmoil of the late 1970s.

"We're on the verge of a rebirth of conservativism," Cruz said.

Looking ahead, Ryan rejected the notion that Republicans were "in the wilderness," noting that the party controls the House and most statehouses. But he said Obama's victory over Romney meant that Republicans would need to recalibrate their approach to deal with the new political realities.

"If we want to promote conservatism, we'll need to use every tool at our disposal," Ryan said. "Sometimes, we will have to reject the president's proposals ? that time may come more than once. And sometimes we'll have to make them better." He said Republicans should have two main goals for the next four years, namely "to mitigate bad policies" and "to advance good policy wherever we can."

Ryan acknowledged that "we all didn't see eye to eye" on the recent "fiscal cliff" vote to deal with a combination of spending cuts and higher taxes that were set to take effect at the start of the year. He defended his support for the bill, saying it was the only way to avoid sweeping tax increases and prevent the economy from going into a free-fall.

As chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan said Republicans needed to guard against a debt crisis for the country that would undermine the economy. He said he would promote changes to Medicare and Medicaid and would propose a budget "that will balance and pay down the debt."

But November's election results still linger. Ryan said he was "disappointed" by the outcome, saying he was "looking forward to taking on the big challenges" while living at the vice president's residence. "My kids were looking forward to having a pool," he joked.

In breast cancer metastasis, researchers identify possible drug target

Jan. 27, 2013 ? The spread of breast cancer to distant organs within the body, an event that often leads to death, appears in many cases to involve the loss of a key protein, according to UC San Francisco researchers, whose new discoveries point to possible targets for therapy.

In the January 27, 2013 online edition of Nature Cell Biology, UCSF scientists describe for the first time how the protein, known as GATA3 -- which is abnormal or absent in many cases of human breast cancer -- normally acts downstream in biochemical pathways to prevent the distant spread of cancer, an event called metastasis.

The discovery points to a biochemical control point that simultaneously holds in check several key events required for tumor cells to successfully spread.

"When GATA3 is present, it turns off many genes that are active in metastasis," said Zena Werb, PhD, a UCSF professor of anatomy who led the research. "We now have identified the molecular mechanisms involved."

The key finding of the new study is that GATA3 acts downstream biochemically to activate a molecule -- obscure until now -- called microRNA29b. MicroRNA29b in turn stops protein production from other genes that play vital roles in metastasis.

The absence or loss of GATA3 can free cancerous cells to break free from their defined roles and tethers within a tumor, to move away from the tumor mass, to induce cancer-promoting inflammation, and to stimulate the development of new blood vessels that can help spreading cancerous cells regrow as tumors in new locations.

"People knew that some of these genes were turned on in some cancers, but they did not know they were turned on because GATA3 and microRNA29b were turned off," Werb said. "If you have 20 genes that are becoming less active all at once due to microRNA29b, it could have a profound effect."

Working with mice, the researchers found that restoring microRNA29b to one of the most deadly types of breast cancer stopped metastasis. But the researchers also found that if they knocked out the microRNA29b, tumors spread even in the presence of GATA3, suggesting that microRNA29b can be the driver of metastasis.

In the mouse models of breast cancer studied by Werb's team, GATA3 normally restrains cancerous cells from breaking away from the main tumor and migrating to other organs.

It might be possible, Werb said, to develop drugs that inhibit breast cancer metastasis by re-activating these controls in cancerous cells that have lost the normal protein.

Many researchers who study early stages of cancer focus on abnormal genes and proteins that cause cells to expand their numbers rapidly, a hallmark of cancer.

However, the ability to spread to distant places and to eventually cause lethal complications requires not only cell division and tumor growth, but also changes in how the cancerous cell negotiates with its surroundings. This relationship must be altered to permit cancer to spread, according to earlier research findings by Werb and others.

"Many of the key processes in cancer that GATA3 suppresses take place outside the cell, in the surrounding environment," she said.

GATA3 is a master control for luminal cells, which line the milk-carrying ducts of the breast. In essence, GATA3 dictates the defining characteristics of a normal breast cell, Werb said.

Luminal breast cancers are the most common form of the disease, and the hormones estrogen and progesterone drive their growth. Loss of the normal GATA3 protein as luminal breast cancers evolve is associated with a greater risk of death, Werb said, and occurs in roughly 10 percent of luminal breast cancer cases.

But, along with many other proteins, GATA3 also is absent in "triple negative," breast cancers, which are more often fatal. Triple negative breast cancers, which disproportionately affect black women and younger women, do not depend on the hormones, nor do they require a third growth factor, called HER2.

Triple negative breast cancers, which account for roughly one-in-five breast cancers, have been more difficult to target successfully with newer treatments.

"The targeting we would like to do is to give back microRNA29b specifically to breast tumor cells to prevent metastasis," Werb said.

London hotels ranked the worst in 100 cities

LONDON (Reuters) - Visitors to London have marked its hotels as the worst in a list of 100 cities due to overpriced minibars, lousy breakfasts and slow service, according to a survey released on Friday.

A study by travel metasearch website Trivago of hotel reviews from more than 140 accommodation booking sites found London came last in a list of 100 cities that had at least 135 hotels and 60 reviews. It did not include TripAdvisor postings.

The German city of Dresden came top with its hotels receiving the highest ratings and most positive reviews from guests.

"Users praised Dresden hotels for their value for money, whilst London hotels were criticised for their prices," said a spokeswoman for Trivago.

"In particular, reviewers felt the minibars were overpriced and breakfast service was both overpriced and disappointing, whilst hotels in Dresden were praised for their delicious and well-valued breakfasts."

She said London hotels were also criticised for overcrowding at breakfast, long queues at check-in, inability to cope with large groups of people, small rooms and poor views.

On the other hand, hotels in Dresden were praised for their exceptional service, efficiency, helpful staff, as well as their spacious rooms with excellent views.

Close behind Dresden in the list of cities with good hotels were Hanoi in Vietnam, Tokyo, Chicago, and Krakow in Poland.

Joining London in the bottom five were Rio de Janiero, Copenhagen, Paris and Amsterdam.

The spokeswoman from Trivago, which is majority owned by Expedia Inc., said the website released its reputation ranking classifying destinations according to the reputation of their hotels twice a year.

Metasearch engines allow users to send requests to other search engines and databases to get a single list of results and are popular with consumers facing an overload of information on various competing deals. The 10 best cities for hotel rooms: 1. Dresden, Germany 2. Hanoi, Vietnam 3. Portland, US 4. Tokyo, Japan 5. Santiago de Compostela, Spain 6. Gdansk, Poland 7. Chicago, US 8. Seattle, US 9. Krakow, Poland 10. Budapest, Hungary

The 10 worst: 91. Los Angeles, US 92. Kiev, Ukraine 93. Frankfurt, Germany 94. Panama City, Panama 95. Brussels, Belgium 96. Amsterdam, Netherlands 97. Paris, France 98. Copenhagen, Denmark 99. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 100. London, UK

Villanova upsets No. 3 Syracuse 75-71 in overtime

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Ryan Arcidiacono hit the tying 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left in regulation, and James Bell hit consecutive 3s in overtime to send Villanova to its second win over a Top 5 team this week, 75-71 over No. 3 Syracuse on Saturday.

The Wildcats defeated No. 5 Louisville 73-64 on Tuesday and became the first unranked team to beat two Top 5 teams in the same season since Florida State in 2011-12, according to STATS LLC.

Arcidiacono's 3-point attempt to tie with about 25 seconds left in regulation was off the mark. Syracuse's Michael Carter-Williams missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and JayVaughn Pinkston of the Wildcats grabbed the rebound.

Bell missed a 3 and Mouphtaou Yarou grabbed the offensive rebound. Syracuse decided not to foul, giving Yarou time to kick it out to Arcidiacono. He let go a leaner from just beyond the 3-point line to tie the game at 61, force overtime and send the crowd into a frenzy.

With the Orange (18-2, 6-1 Big East) down two points in overtime, Brandon Triche made one free throw with 46.5 seconds left.

Bell followed with a layup to for a 71-68 lead and the Wildcats (13-7, 4-3) held on from the free throw line.

Philly's college fans came down with a case of court-storming fever this week after Villanova's win over Louisville and La Salle's 54-53 win the next night over No. 9 Butler. At the Wells Fargo Center, home of the NHL's Flyers, the fans made it a Philly hoops hat trick, rushing the court in celebration of one of the biggest regular-season weeks in Villanova history.

Florida State beat No.3 North Carolina and No. 4 Duke in its big week.

Darrun Hilliard scored 25 points and Yarou had 14 points and 16 rebounds for the Wildcats while Bell scored 13 points.

Triche led the Orange with 23 points and Carter-Williams scored 17 points. The Orange had an eight-game winning streak and both of their losses came to Philadelphia teams. They lost to Temple on Dec. 22.

The Orange clearly could have use James Southerland in the tight game. Southerland, second on the team in scoring at 13.6 points and the team leader with 33 3-pointers, was declared out indefinitely because of an eligibility matter involving academics that has yet to be resolved.

Jerami Grant, who played well in Southerland's absence, fouled out with 5:22 left and the Orange up one. His fifth foul was against Hilliard. Hilliard missed both from the line, the Orange stormed down in transition off the defensive board, and Triche hit a 3 for a 57-53 lead.

The Orange just could never put them away. They missed six of eight shots in overtime and were only 5 of 14 overall from 3-point range.

Grant's 3-pointer early in the second half gave the Orange their first lead of the game, 33-32.

The Wildcats gave all the students standing behind each basket and dressed in white an early reason to think they would be rushing again. They opened the game on a 10-0 run and stretched the lead to 25-13. But the fun didn't last long.

Triche, a 50 percent shooter on the season, hit Syracuse's first 3-pointer of the half to slice the lead to four. He tipped in a basket at the buzzer to cut the lead to 32-26.

Syracuse missed 10 of its first 14 shots and finished at 29 percent for the half.

China's Legislature Adopts Decision on Strengthening the ...

By Li Jie Han

On December 28, 2012, the Standing Committee of the National People?s Congress (?NPC?) of the People?s Republic of China adopted the Decision on Strengthening the Protection of Online Information (?Decision?). The Decision contains twelve (12) clauses, which are applicable to entities in both the public and private sectors in respect of the collection and processing of electronic personal information on the Internet.

The Decision sets forth a number of provisions specifically governing the activities of Internet service providers (?ISPs?), other business enterprises and non-profit enterprises that handle electronic personal information.? Each of these entities must:

  • explicitly state the purpose, means and scope of their collection and use of electronic personal information, publicize their relevant policies, and obtain the consent of the subjects for the collection and use;
  • keep collected electronic personal information in strict confidentiality, and shall not disclose, alter or destroy the collected electronic personal information, or not sell or illegally provide such information to other persons;
  • adopt technical and other necessary measures to ensure the safety of electronic personal information, and should promptly take remedial measures when such information is disclosed, damaged or lost;
  • adopt information security safeguards and take prompt remedial measures in case that they discover users distributing information illegally and notify relevant government agencies.
  • refrain from sending messages without consent (or in contravention of directions not to send) to fixed telephones, mobile telephones and individual e-mail boxes

Notably, ISPs must require users to furnish authentic identity information when providing access or information related services to the users.? This provision, which could potentially undermine the protection of personal privacy, has been most widely reported.? Nevertheless, the other provisions, though limited to electronic personal information and thus somewhat narrow in scope, provide additional protection especially in commercial contexts and thus warrant attention form a compliance standpoint.

The provisions under the Decision set out basic principles and are comparatively brief. It is expected that the NPC or other government agencies, e.g., the Ministry of Industry and Information technology (MIIT), will pass further legislation to clarify and substantiate these provisions.? In the meantime, those companies collecting personal information through their websites operated within the PRC should make sure they fully and fairly disclose the type of personal information being collected and the purposes for which it will be used.? The mechanisms for doing this should be reasonable based on how sensitive the data is and how intrusive the use.

The Decision in Chinese language together with a English translation is available here: http://chinacopyrightandmedia.wordpress.com/2012/12/28/national-peoples-congress-standing-committee-decision-concerning-strengthening-network-information-protection.
