Monsters rule box office in 'Hotel Transylvania'

By Lisa Richwine, Reuters

LOS ANGELES?-- Family film "Hotel Transylvania" brought new life to movie box offices with a chart-topping $43 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales during the weekend, a record for a September opening.

The animated 3-D movie featuring the voices of Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez finished ahead of new science fiction film "Looper," which took in $21.2 million from Friday through Sunday.

The police drama "End of Watch," which was in a tie with "House at the End of the Street" for the top spot last week, landed in third place with $8 million, according to studio estimates.

The big turnout for the top films helped revive a box office that has struggled through several weeks of sluggish attendance.

In "Hotel Transylvania," Frankenstein, the Invisible Man and other monsters gather for a party at a high-end resort operated by Dracula. Their celebration is disrupted when a boy discovers the hotel and falls in love with Dracula's daughter but must deal her overprotective father.

The film's domestic sales far exceeded distributor Sony Corp's prediction for $25 million-plus from the North American (U.S. and Canadian) market. The movie added $8.1 million from international markets, for a global debut of $51.1 million.

"It's absolutely an incredible result," said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Corp's Sony Pictures studio, adding that the studio had hopes for something in the $30 million range, which he noted "in this market would have been extraordinary."

The hefty take easily beat the September opening record of $35.65 million for "Sweet Home Alabama," which had stood for 10 years.

"Hotel Transylvania" cost $85 million to produce.

Sony also distributed second-place film "Looper," a time travel story about a man charged with killing an older version of himself. The movie starring Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt earned rave reviews from critics with a 93 percent positive rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

Sony had predicted ticket sales of up to $20 million domestically for "Looper." Endgame Entertainment paid for the film's production.

"To see it open as it did bodes well for how well this movie will play in the future," said Bruer.

The weekend's other new movie, "Won't Back Down," stars Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal as two determined mothers who try to transform their children's failing inner city school. The film started off with $2.7 million over the weekend, in 10th place.

Rounding out the top five, Clint Eastwood baseball film "Trouble with the Curve" scored $7.5 million to take the No. 4 slot, while horror flick "House at the End of the Street" earned $7.2 million during its second weekend in theaters.

New comedy "Pitch Perfect," about a girls' singing group, pulled in an impressive $5.2 million in a limited debut on 335 screens for the sixth spot. Distributor Universal Studios chose a smaller opening in hopes of generating buzz ahead of a wider release on Oct. 5.

Stock bulls eye Spain, Bernanke and jobs

NEW YORK?-?The S&P 500.INX.SPX finished its third positive quarter in the last four on Friday, despite suffering its largest weekly percentage decline since June. For the past three months, the S&P 500 gained 5.9 percent - its best third quarter since 2010. In contrast, the index was down 1.3 percent for the week.

The benchmark S&P 500 earlier this month reached its highest level since late 2007. Yet uncertainty remains over whether stocks can hold their gains against the headwinds of a struggling economy.

That explains, in part, the retreat over the last several days.

The S&P 500 hit a high of 1,474.51 in mid-September before pulling back by a bit more than 2 percent. A run at 1,500 seems possible, but the flurry of economic and world events ahead probably will prevent a major advance in the coming week.

Bulls are betting this week?s Spanish budget proposals will be a preamble to a bailout request by Mariano Rajoy?s government. The move would be seen as a first step to get the finances of the euro zone?s fourth-largest economy in order and would clear some of the market uncertainty regarding the euro zone crisis.

Monetary policy is also on the list of market catalysts next week. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is scheduled to speak on Monday and the minutes of the latest FOMC meeting are set for release later in the week. The week?s agenda includes meetings of the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan.

?I think we could see a rebound next week if we get some of the stars aligning and have Spain ask for a bailout, the ECB announcing favorable terms for that bailout, and if we see the Bank of Japan announce further monetary intervention,? said Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. ?If Spain and the ECB don?t deliver, we could set ourselves up for a further lateral move in the markets. A negative would be if Rajoy flat-out denies that they need a bailout.? The ECB and BOJ are set to meet on Thursday, with the Bank of Japan?s meeting extending until Friday.

FACTORIES, JOBS AND THE DEBATES: Chinese factory and business conditions data will kick off a numbers-heavy calendar for markets. Manufacturing PMI, due on Monday, is expected to show a second straight month of contraction.

A snapshot of U.S. manufacturing activity will be provided on Monday when the Institute for Supply Management releases its September index. The September ISM reading is expected to show another month of contraction, but at a slightly slower pace than in August. On Wednesday, the ISM will release its US services-sector Purchasing Managers? Index, which could show a slight deceleration in the pace of growth in the non-manufacturing sector.

?We have Chinese economic data over the weekend, and we?ll see how markets react on Monday,? said Wasif Latif, vice president of equity investments at San Antonio, Texas-based USAA Investment Management. ?It seems like the market is bracing for bad numbers, meaning if they?re not as bad, it could be market-positive,? Latif said.

Non-farm payrolls for September, due on Friday, are seen up 115,000, while the U.S. unemployment rate is seen ticking up 0.1 percent from August to 8.2 percent in September.

The jobs data will come on the heels of the first of three U.S. presidential debates, scheduled for Wednesday night. Recent poll numbers point to a strengthening lead by President Barack Obama, but a weak payrolls reading could give some hope to Republican challenger Mitt Romney. ?If Romney doesn?t turn the ship with a very strong (debate)performance, the president is going to win,? said Jack de Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He said the trend in the polls has taken away some of the market uncertainty regarding the presidential election. He added that an ECB- or Spain-related headline out of Europe on Thursday could overcome almost anything that would happen Wednesday night during the debate. ?I think the market is coming to terms with the fact the president is ahead, and unless something significant changes, (he) will prevail.?

Personal Storage Ottawa Helps Free Up Space in Your Home Or ...

When it comes to freeing up space in your home, you need a company that offers personal storage ottawa services. Getting affordable personal storage is important when your home is either too small or far too cluttered to be comfortable. Personal storage Ottawa units allow you to store all of those items in a safe and secure environment. You don't have to worry about anybody accessing these items, since you will be able to lock the storage unit so that nobody can get to it. There a lot of benefits to owning a personal storage unit, below you will find some of the items that are useful to be stored in these containers.

Yard equipment We don't often mow or clean up our yards, so storing yard equipment in a personal storage unit is a great opportunity. If you have a lot of machinery like weed whackers, lawnmowers, tremors and more, storing this in your personal storage unit gets it out of your home and away from your sight. The best part about it is that storage units aren't really that expensive. In general, a typical storage unit will be well under $100 per month. This allows you to save money and get all of your garden equipment stored safely and securely in a unit that you can access when you need it. Anytime that you go to clean your yard, you can simply drive down to your unit and pick up your items.

A spare car Believe it or not, storage unit facilities will actually let you store a spare car inside one of their containers. Lots of people have spare cars around their home, but this can really take away from the overall appeal of your home. If you have a spare car that just sits in your front yard or driveway, you can store that car in a storage unit so that you no longer have to see it anymore. Surely, you and your neighbors are going to appreciate this opportunity.

Antiques Antiques can be something that we want to hold onto for as long as possible. Storing these antiques somewhere that they're going to be safe is important so that you can one day sell them and get a return on investment. If you have lots of antique furniture or items in your home, rather than keeping them in the garage or sitting somewhere that they really don't belong, you can store them in a storage unit. It doesn't matter what type of antiques you own, storage units will accept whatever it is you want to bring into the facility.

Business supplies Often times, businesses will have far too many supplies in order to keep all of them at their place of business. Additionally, if you operate out of your home, it can be difficult to keep track of business supplies and organize them efficiently. If you'd like a place to store some of the things that you purchase for your business, a storage unit is a great opportunity to do so.

3.4 magnitude quake rattles Dallas, Texas, suburb

(AP) ? A minor earthquake measuring a 3.4 magnitude rattled a suburb west of Dallas overnight, but there were no immediate reports of any damages or injuries and a major international airport nearby continued operations without disruption, authorities said.

The quake struck at 11:05 p.m. CDT Saturday and was centered about 2 miles north of the Dallas suburb of Irving, the US Geological Survey's national earthquake monitoring center in Golden, Colo., reported. USGS Geophysicist Randy Baldwin told The Associated Press by telephone from Colorado that the quake lasted several seconds and was strong enough to be felt near the epicenter and probably up to 15 or 20 miles away.

He said the quake's online reporting system received no reports of any damages or injuries, but was flooded with some 1,200 online responses from people who felt it. "Of all the reports we've received there were no intensities of a damaging nature. We haven't heard of any kind of damage and it's probably too small for that," he added.

Authorities in Irving said early Sunday they were still checking their area but had no immediate report on the quake or any impact.

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport continued operations normally during and after the quake, which barely rattled nerves at the airport located partially within the city limits of Irving, said airport public affairs officer David Magana. He told AP said the airport, which bustles at peak hours to get some 1,800 flights in and out daily, was in a quiet period with very little air traffic late Saturday night.

But he said those still in the airport definitely felt the quake.

"I wouldn't call it panic. I would call it surprise," Magana said.

He said members of the airport operations team immediately conducted a special inspection of the airfield, buildings and found nothing harmed by the quake.

"We don't have any damage to report. There were no impacts or (power) outages and no disruptions to flights," Magana said. "I felt it at my house. It shook it a little bit but it wasn't enough of a jolt to shake anything loose like you have in California. I've been in California and this was nothing like that."

Some reports in Dallas said the rattling was felt for many blocks all around Irving and the surrounding area, beginning lightly and ending with a jolt. One person reported the quake was strong enough to knock open some file cabinets at a home near the epicenter.

Baldwin says smaller aftershocks are a possibility over the coming day or so, noting that the region has been rattled by a number of minor quakes since 2008.

He said the Saturday night quake was detected by a seismological station located about 65 miles from the epicenter ? somewhat distant ? and the preliminary magnitude of 3.4 could be revised up or down once further data is evaluated.

Therapy over the phone as effective as face-to-face, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? A new study reveals that cognitive therapy over the phone is just as effective as meeting face-to-face. The research was published September 28, in the journal PLoS ONE.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge together with the National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research & Care (NIHR CLAHRC) and NHS Midlands & East also found that providing talking therapy over the phone increases access to psychological therapies for people with common mental disorders and potentially saves the NHS money.

For the study, data from 39,000 patients in seven established Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services (an initiative which aims to expand the availability of psychological therapies) in the East of England were used to compare Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) delivered face-to-face versus over the phone. For all but an infrequent, identifiable clinical group with more severe illness, therapy over the phone was as effective as face to face, and the cost per session was 36.2% lower.

Patients may be unable to access health services due to transport problems, work commitments and physical disability, among many reasons. So increasing availability of talking therapies over the phone will make mental health services more accessible to patients.

On the back of the study results, NHS Midlands & East has instigated a regional training programme to standardise service delivery and ensure therapists are competent at phone contacts. The training programme has recently been extended into a partnership with a third party organisation.

Professor Peter Jones, Principal Investigator of the study from the University of Cambridge, said: "Providing therapy over the phone will not only help individuals gain much-needed access to mental health treatment, it will provide a more cost effective way of providing these services at a time when everyone is concerned about cutting costs."

Mental health illnesses affect one in four adults in Britain every year. Additionally, the NHS spends more on mental health than it does on cancer, heart disease, stroke and asthma put together (a total of ?9.95 billion in 2010-2011), with general practitioners spending more than a third of their time on mental health issues.

(AP) ? Arnold Schwarzenegger is confirming that he had a "hot affair" with actress Brigitte Nielsen at a time he and Maria Shriver were dating and already living together.

Schwarzenegger and Nielsen co-starred in the 1985 film "Red Sonja." Nielsen write in a memoir published last year that she and Schwarzenegger had an "outrageous affair" while making the movie and that she did know until later that he was involved with Shriver.

In his memoir "Total Recall," coming out Monday, Schwarzenegger writes that he and Nielsen did indeed have a "hot affair," but he knew it wouldn't last. In fact, their "fling" only made him realize that he wanted to marry Shriver.

Nielsen would soon marry Schwarzenegger's fellow action star, Sylvester Stallone.

Romney's wealth as stated by campaign omits at least $100 million ...

Mitt Romney?s history as a business magnate was supposed to be one of his best assets going into the election. Early on the GOP?s messaging that a successful businessman would be the best choice to lead us out of economic disaster seemed like an easy sell. But it hasn?t gone that way for Mitt?recent polls show his enormous personal wealth has alienated him from voters, who feel Mitt can?t understand their problems.

As it turns out, there?s a lot more of that wealth which, until now, voters haven?t even known about.

The Romney campaign has consistently stated Mitt is worth $250 million. But a new report in Bloomberg concerning Romney?s fancy finances reveals there?s at least another $100 million that the campaign omits from this figure. Even more problematic, the extra $100 million is set up as a tax-free shelter for his heirs.

From Bloomberg:

Romney?s effective income tax rate in 2011 was about 14 percent. He has also enhanced his family?s wealth by moving assets worth $100 million into a trust while taking steps to avoid paying any gift taxes. The trust?s value isn?t counted in the $250 million that his campaign cites as Romney?s net worth.

Here?s how the trust works: it allowed Romney to dedicate shares in ad company DoubleClick to his heirs before the company went public, when the shares were technically worth nothing or very little. Less than a year later the company had gone public, Google had bought it for $3.2 billion, and Romney was able to sell those shares at a 1,000% profit, pay the relatively low capital gains tax on the profit himself, and avoid paying a gift tax altogether. Romney did the same with hedge funds, interests in Bain Capital funds, etc. There is no tax liability to his kids, who will inherit the $100 million-plus dollar fund with no tax liability whatsoever.

So not only is Romney actually worth at least $100 million more than we thought he was worth, that $100 million is sequestered in an IDGT trust for the express purpose of avoiding taxes.

This can?t sit well alongside Romney?s recent damning words for the supposed 47% who don?t pay income tax?that they think they?re ?victims? and that they?re ?dependent on government? for their financial well-being.

Somewhat hilariously, Bloomberg points out that the IDGT trust, ?a more powerful driver of wealth transfer in estate planning than almost anything else,? is hence nicknamed the ?I Dig It? trust. Can?t you just picture Mitt with his tax attorney siphoning off one of his hundreds of millions to be sequestered as a tax-free trust for his kids, while staying off the books of his personal wealth??Ha ha, I dig it,? he?d say. Must be nice.

New Student Spotlight: Meet Tim! | Marginalia

Tim Zeiss

Last week, I had the pleasure of introducing you to Devin Schuyler, one of the new Art Education MAT?students in Cohort 21. This week, I?d like to introduce Tim Zeiss, another member of Cohort 21! I?ve realized that I love doing these kinds of blog posts, because it?s always great to find out where someone has come from in life before you met them and where they want to go.

Tell me about yourself, Tim!

I grew up in Glen Ellyn, IL and always had some sort of creativity going on around me.? My grandpa made stained glass windows, and my dad is a painter and woodworker.? My brother and I were obsessed with drawing.? Art was just kind a way of life for us.? Cartooning was my favorite.

The older I got, life would veer me away from art.? In my senior year at Northern Illinois University (Biology Degree, Art Minor, and a Pre Med Certificate in Optometry), I truly owned that the direction I was headed wasn?t right.? Being an Optometrist would be a good job with good money, but I had no passion for it.? What excited me was the time off, when I could work on my art!? So, I went back to Northern for a BFA in oil painting.? In a way, this re-lit my artistic passion!? It was the first time in years I was working with total freedom.? No more being told what to draw.? It was a refreshing thing to return to? I even looked at childhood drawings for reference!

Why do you want to be a teacher, and what?s your past work experience?

After graduation, I wasn?t sure what I was going to do.? Living off your work alone is practically impossible when you?re first starting out.? I?ve been lucky and sold work online and shown in 23 galleries since 2006. ?It was not enough to survive.

Tim?s Survival Resume:

  • Barista at Starbucks
  • EMT-B on an ambulance
  • Rock climbing instructor in some awesome places like Moab, Utah, and Colorado?
  • Aircraft refueler at two airports
  • and finally, a surgery scheduler at a hospital?

What?s the ONE thing that all these jobs had in common?? They still didn?t settle that passion! It was the same thing I felt being an Optometrist would have felt like!? I felt like a robot earning a check.? It wasn?t fulfilling in the least.

Teaching is entirely different.? It?s a job where I can actually use the skills and knowledge that I?m passionate about.? I?d leave feeling like I?ve helped someone.? If art is something a student thrives at, or something they want to learn, I?ll be ready.? I?ll respond to their individual needs and teach them fundamentals that build skills.? Art often has this magical, fantastical stigma around, making a lot of students think they can?t ?do? it.? Too often, an idea or daydream is stomped short because it?s ?too hard,? or feels ?unrealistic.?? At K-12, even college, that pattern of thinking can take hold and, sometimes, never let go.? Sometimes, teachers who give a student that extra push to go beyond their own comfort zone can do amazing things.

Where do you see yourself teaching (e.g. in an urban environment, in Chicago or another major city, in the suburbs, another country, in a museum or theater, etc.)?

I?ve lived in Chicago for the past five years, so I picture working in a high school somewhere in the city.? That?s not to say I?d rule out the suburbs.? I?d prefer to stay in the Chicago area because of family and friends.

I see art education as constantly evolving.? Teachers need to evolve, too.? Whether they?re switching schools, experiencing different cultures, or individualizing?curricula, they need to be able to mix every combination of that together instantly.? An art teacher should also practice art.? No matter what media they work with, students will be inspired.? In turn, these same teachers will get inspiration from the growing minds they work with weekly.

What made you decide to come to Columbia?

As I said, I was already thinking about teaching, but one day, on the El, I saw an ad for the MAT, applied, and got in!? It?s not a very romantic story?

A piece of advice I?d like to offer to anyone considering becoming a teacher would be?

Because of my past jobs, my advice to someone who is focused on a career would be to just try it!? You will never know if you like it until you try it.? You?ll also never know if you hate it.? If you love it, LIFE IS GOOD!

Ryder Cup: Tiger vs. Rory, US vs. Europe for golf dominance

The Ryder Cup golf matches are taking place this weekend near Chicago. The US will try to wrest control of the 85 year-old Ryder Cup from a determined European squad, led by Rory McIlroy.

The biennial matches, which began in 1927, were the brainchild of Samuel Ryder, who brought top golfers from the US and Great Britain together to compete in team match play.

Over the years, the US has captured 25 Ryder Cups. The team that first represented Great Britain and Ireland began to add golfers from the European continent in 1979, and has won 11 Ryder Cups, with two ties.

The format of the Ryder Cup is a team competition, consisting of two-man alternate shot foursomes and two-man four-ball or best ball Friday and Saturday. In four-ball, each golfer plays his own ball. The player with the best score on any given hole between the twosome is the score that is recorded for his team. Sunday consists of a dozen singles matches. All competition is match play.

The US team is captained by Davis Love III, who has represented the United States in Ryder Cup play in the past. Michael Jordan, a Chicago sports icon and golf enthusiast, will be a special team advisor to Love. Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships in the 1990s. Love and Jordan's friendship goes back to their days as classmates at the University of North Carolina in the early 1980s.

As in the past few Ryder Cups, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will lead the American side. Earlier this week, Tiger shouldered the blame for the US not winning more Ryder Cups in the last few years, reports CBSSports.com.

PFT: Baltimore fans give officials a standing ovation

Rex RyanAP

When Jets coach Rex Ryan told Joe McKnight that he?s been traded from the offense to the defense, McKnight took that as an indication that he?s not good enough as a running back.

Ryan says that was the wrong message for McKnight to get. Instead, Ryan thinks McKnight should take it as a compliment that the coaches think he has the talent to move to cornerback, even though he hasn?t played there since high school.

?I think Joe misunderstood,? Ryan told reporters today. ?We?re trying to teach Joe our defense. The coverages and things like that. He still has a role on offense. It?s not that he?s being forgotten as a running back, that?s not the case. I want him to learn the coverages and things like that on defense. The way the league is now, you almost can?t have enough corners. They?re going three, four, five, receivers or something, so you have to be able to match up. The one thing I know from a physical standpoint, [is] that Joe can, from a talent and a physical standpoint, he can match up. He can run. He?s got size. He?s got some natural instincts, and that?s what we?ve seen. When we used to put him on scout team, that?s what we saw. Yesterday, he actually picked off all three quarterbacks. That?s a good thing and a bad thing.?

Ryan heard that McKnight took it as a criticism of his ability as a running back, and that he thinks he didn?t communicate well enough to McKnight.

?That was certainly not the message that I wanted to send to him, so I wasn?t clear on that,? Ryan said. ?He?s got talent as a running back. The one thing I know about Joe is when given an opportunity, as a kick returner, he led the NFL as a kick returner, so I think that?s pretty impressive. He was the number one kid in the country coming out of high school. His talent is pretty special. I had a coach from USC tell me that the day he walked on campus he was their best corner. They wanted to play him at running back, but that?ll give you an indication of the kind of talent that Joe has.?

Ultimately, a player?s job is to play whatever position his coach tells him to play, and if Ryan thinks McKnight can help the Jets more as a cornerback than as a running back, then McKnight is a cornerback. McKnight shouldn?t have a problem with that.

Outside groups making play to help Romney with ads

(AP) ? New Republican-leaning independent groups entered the presidential advertising fray Wednesday as polling suggests Mitt Romney's campaign may be losing ground against President Barack Obama in key swing states.

The commercials, aimed at voters who supported Obama in 2008 but are undecided now, join those from the campaigns and outside groups swamping a narrow and possibly shrinking map of competitive states in the fast-moving presidential contest.

Americans for Job Security launched an ad in six swing states as part of an $8.7 million ad buy disclosed last week. The group, which does not have to disclose its donors, has actively supported Republican congressional candidates but has stayed out of the presidential campaign until now. The Ending Spending Action Fund, a new conservative group bankrolled by billionaire Joe Ricketts, was set to debut a $10 million, four-state ad campaign beginning Thursday.

The two groups have joined a crowded field of players in a presidential advertising landscape that has largely narrowed to nine states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. All are states Obama carried against Republican John McCain in 2008 but have been tightly contested this time.

A pro-Romney super PAC, Restore Our Future, is advertising in Michigan, while another Republican-leaning group, the American Future Fund, announced Wednesday it would run ads supporting Romney in Minnesota. But polling shows those states tilting heavily toward Obama and neither is considered a top-tier battleground this time because the candidates themselves aren't on the air in those states.

It's a vast change from 2008, when the Obama and McCain campaigns advertised in 21 states that were considered competitive. Several of those have seen virtually no advertising this year, including Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Polls show Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, Montana and West Virginia all safe for Romney this time ? Obama carried Indiana in 2008 but is not expected to again because he's not competing in earnest there ? while Maine, New Mexico and Pennsylvania are expected to favor the president as they did in 2008.

The decision by Romney's campaign and allied groups to abandon advertising in Pennsylvania particularly surprised political observers, since the state was a top battleground 2008 and is home to many of the white, working-class voters who polls show have been skeptical of Obama since his first run for the presidency. Pro-Romney independent groups including Crossroads GPS and Restore Our Future advertised there but have since pulled out, as did the pro-Obama group Priorities USA Action. Neither the Obama nor the Romney campaigns actively advertised in the state.

Elizabeth Wilner, vice president of the advertising tracking group Kantar/Campaign Media Analysis, said that except for the recent addition of Wisconsin as a battleground, the states that have seen presidential campaign advertising have not changed since the spring. Independent groups, not the Obama and Romney campaigns, have pushed to make states like Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota and even Wisconsin more competitive, Wilner said.

"The cake was basically baked in May. The states you're seeing in play have stayed the same," Wilner said. "The candidates never made real investments in any other states. The independent groups are the first to go in to a state and the first to go out."

The ads from Americans for Job Security and the Ending Spending Action Fund are targeting disaffected Obama voters who may be persuaded to support Romney this time. They also focus on women, who polls show favor Obama by a wide margin in many swing states.

The Americans for Job Security ad, "Running," depicts a woman jogging with a baby stroller. She said she voted for Obama but is disillusioned by his economic policies and adds that her husband has been "laid off twice" during Obama's first term.

"Now we're facing another recession," she says in the ad. "The future is getting worse under President Obama." The ad is airing in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

The Ending Spending ad campaign was expected to launch ads Thursday in Virginia, Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin. In one 60-second ad, female voters who backed Obama look into the camera and say they now regret their decision.

"I had huge hopes but ? you know what? ? I got burned in 2008," says a voter identified as Jodi C., a registered nurse from Illinois. "He has failed to address my two most important things, which are debt and divisiveness."

"I didn't feel that he was doing enough to unite the country," says a voter Connie F., a mother and grandmother of four from Green Bay, Wis.

In another spot, former Rep. Artur Davis of Alabama explains why he left the Democratic Party. "This year, I'm casting my vote for someone who can fix the problems facing us. That's Mitt Romney," Davis says in a 30-second ad that is part of the Ending Spending campaign.

Online, the voters expand on their reasons for voting against Obama.

"I'm a factory worker, just barely hanging on," says a voter identified as Anita L. from Woodville, Wis. "If Obama gets back in, there is no future for anybody."

The ads and videos were produced by Stephen Bannon, the conservative filmmaker behind Citizen United's recent documentary about disaffected voters, "The Hope and the Change." They are being paid for by Ricketts, the billionaire founder of the Nebraska-based TD Ameritrade Securities. Earlier this year he rejected overtures from some Republican strategists to fund an independent group that would run ads focusing on Obama's controversial former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

The Ricketts ads were set to be coupled with radio and online advertising, direct mail and door-to-door voter contact programs led by former Bush White House political director Sara Taylor Fagen.

Salisbury News: Maryland Chooses To Innovate For A Brighter Future

Recently the U.S. Chamber of Commerce ranked Maryland No. 1 in the nation for innovation and entrepreneurship. A champion of pro-business policies, the chamber lauded Maryland for its commitments to education, start-up companies and collaboration between business and academia.

The recipe for Maryland?s appeal is simple ? we reward innovation, invest in our skilled workforce and encourage entrepreneurship through state programs and public-private partnerships. With world-class research labs, brilliant entrepreneurs and highly educated workers, Maryland is uniquely ready to take advantage of a fast-changing global economy in which sectors such as biotechnology, cybersecurity and high-tech manufacturing are keys to good jobs and bright futures.

InvestMaryland and InnovateMaryland, both created in the past 18 months, have $84 million to make venture capital investments in high-tech Maryland start-ups and $5.8 million to commercialize promising technologies from state universities. With input from the business community and Maryland residents, we have also made doing business easier by repealing or revising more than 130 outdated state regulations and streamlining state processes.

Maryland had the nation?s highest median household income in 2010, according to the Census Bureau. Marylanders also have the third-lowest state and local tax burden as a share of their incomes, according to Federal Funds Information for States.

The number of millionaires calling the Free State home has increased almost 20 percent since 2007, and by last year Maryland had the greatest concentration of millionaire households in the country, according to Phoenix Marketing International. The latest year of data available from Maryland?s Comptroller (2010) shows a 16 percent increase in the number of millionaire tax filers, following the dip during the recession. The latest IRS figures (2010) show that thousands more people are moving into Maryland than out.

Why? For the quality of life Marylanders have cultivated for decades, our abundant natural resources, our commitment to innovation, our proximity to key federal agencies ? and also because Maryland has the nation?s best public school system, ranked No. 1 by Education Week for four years running. The state also boasts an affordable public university system with gems such as University of Maryland, Baltimore County, which was ranked No. 4 in undergraduate teaching last year by U.S. News and World Report. While many states cut education spending during the recession, Maryland increased its investment in the workforce of the future by 7.4 percent per student, the third-highest increase of any state.

Today, Maryland companies make solar panel arrays that power bases in Afghanistan, produce vaccines that protect against influenza and anthrax, design athletic wear for top athletes and launch satellites that power international commerce. In a world increasingly driven by technology and innovation, Maryland will continue to invest in our people, nurture their ideas, reward their entrepreneurial spirit, celebrate their achievements and abolish obstacles to their success.

Christian S. Johansson is Maryland?s secretary of business and economic development.

Bees decrease food intake, live longer, when given compound found in red wine

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? The idea that drinking red wine may provide health benefits -- or possibly even extend your life -- is an appealing thought for many people. Now, there may be added attraction. Researchers have found that when given resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, bees consume less food.

Previous scientific studies on resveratrol show that it lengthens the lifespan of diverse organisms ranging from unicellular yeast to fruit flies and mice. Since bees are social animals like humans, a team of scientists from Arizona State University, the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, and Harvard Medical School, decided to test the effects of the chemical on the honey bee.

In a series of experiments published in the journal Aging, the scientists tested the effects of resveratrol on the lifespan, learning ability, and food perception in honey bees.

Their research has confirmed that not only does this compound extend the lifespan of honey bees by 33 to 38 percent, it also changes the decisions that bees make about food by triggering a "moderation effect" when they eat.

"For the first time, we conducted several tests on the effects of resveratrol by using the honey bee as a model," said Brenda Rasc?n, an ASU alumnus and doctoral student with Gro Amdam, an associate professor in ASU's School of Life Sciences and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. "We were able to confirm that under normal living conditions, resveratrol lengthened lifespan in honey bees."

Since resveratrol is an antioxidant, researchers also questioned whether it would be capable of diminishing the damaging effects of "free radicals" -- often released during stressful conditions. Free radicals are believed to cause damage to cells, and have an effect on how we age. Resveratrol did not, however, prove to extend lives of bees living under stressful conditions.

Yet, since the bees tested with the compound were living longer, researchers asked the next question: What's happening that is causing them to live longer?

"Because what we eat is such an important contributor to our physical health, we looked at the bees' sensitivity to sugar and their willingness to consume it," said Amdam. "Bees typically gorge on sugar and while it's the best thing for them, we know that eating too much is not necessarily a good thing."

Interestingly, Amdam, Rasc?n, and their research team discovered that bees given the compound were less sensitive to sugar. By using different sugar solutions -- some very diluted and some with stronger concentrations -- they found that bees receiving resveratrol were not as interested in eating the sugar solutions unless the sugar was highly concentrated. The bees basically changed their perception about food.

In a final experiment, they measured how much food the bees would consume if given the opportunity to eat as much sugar water as they possibly could.

"Surprisingly, the bees that received the drug decreased their food intake," said Rasc?n. "The bees were allowed to eat as much as they pleased and were certainly not starving -- they simply would not gorge on the food that we know they like. It's possible resveratrol may be working by some mechanism that is related to caloric restriction -- a dietary regimen long known to extend lifespan in diverse organisms."

The Research Council of Norway and the PEW Charitable Trust funded this study.

HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE, LEGAL ... - PJ Media

HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE, LEGAL EDUCATION EDITION: Carnage in 1L Enrollments. The question is, will we see this spread to undergraduate enrollment, too?

I think so.

Meanwhile, I was talking to someone at a small, posh private law school recently who said their entering class turned out to be 30 fewer than expected. That?s probably about a million-dollar budget hit, give or take. And remember that law school budgets are typically 80-90 percent salary, making it hard to cut spending quickly. I expect there?s a lot of that going around.

UPDATE: A reader emails:

Today you posted: ?The question is, will we see this spread to undergraduate enrollment, too?? The followup question is What are we going to do with all these kids when they graduate. (Like my son ? whom we can?t afford to send to school like ITT for AA 2 yr degree ? but can?t get course he needs at Southern CA community college ? because everyone else is going there.) For profit schools are extremely expensive and feed into the student loan machine. School district vocational schools are overburden, and southern CA community colleges are also overburden. Is there a future market in more moderately priced vocational schools aimed at specialized jobs ? letting kids earn specialization in highly skilled jobs ? sort of like a two year campus? Maybe some private schools can be converted. Oh, forgive me, I said a naughty work ? ?future market? implying ?entrepreneur?. Please allow me to correct myself ?The government needs to do something?.

In some areas, tradesmen?s unions provide training in things like welding, electrical work, plumbing, etc. And you can get your Commercial Driver?s License fairly cheaply and if you go to the oil-boom areas they?re paying truck drivers pretty well, though I don?t know if they?ll hire 18-year-olds. The bigger problem, however, is that the economy isn?t growing fast enough ? to the extent it?s growing at all ? to create jobs that will absorb new graduates. That?s something that the govenrment can do something about, by regulating and taxing less. But, alas, such an approach provides insufficient opportunities for graft and is hence unpopular with the political class.

Canadian Ford Workers Accept Contract

Canadian auto workers at Ford have voted to accept the new contract that their union leadership negotiated last week, the union said Sunday.

The Canadian Auto Workers union said 82 percent of its Ford members accepted the four-year deal. The union did not indicate how many of its 4,500 workers at Ford cast ballots.

The union leadership also reached an agreement with GM last week. GM workers are set to vote on the tentative agreement on Wednesday and Thursday.

Talks continue with Chrysler. The union wants Chrysler to match the deals they have reached with Ford and GM.

The Ford and GM contacts cut wages for new hires and freezes pay for current workers. But it also gives them lump-sum payments to cover inflation and for ratifying the deal.

Under the Ford and GM deals, the companies will pay new workers 60 percent of the current top wage of $33.89 Canadian dollars (US$34.74) an hour, according to the CAW. That would mean new workers would be paid around $20.33 Canadian ($20.84). They can move up the wage scale and reach the top wage in 10 years.

U.S. workers at the Detroit automakers approved a similar two-tier wage agreement five years ago, but in those agreements, workers don't automatically get the top wage after 10 years.

Ford said there will be significant cost-savings realized through the wage structure for new employees. Ford also said the deal creates more than 600 jobs in Canada over the life of the contract.

"By becoming more competitive in our labor costs, we are better positioned to support the growth of the Canadian economy and to provide new job opportunities," Stacey Allerton, vice president of Human Resources at Ford of Canada, said in a statement Sunday.

The auto companies had said Canada is the most expensive place in the world to make cars and trucks, and indicated they could move production south if the CAW didn't cut costs. The CAW represents about 21,000 auto workers in Canada and about 16 percent of auto production in North America.

Canada's advantages in the past ? a weak Canadian dollar and government health care ? have all but vanished compared with U.S. factories. In addition, the United Auto Workers union in the U.S. has agreed to steeper concessions than the CAW, making U.S. labor costs cheaper. Going into the talks, the Detroit automakers were paying an estimated $60 to $62 an hour for labor and benefits in Canada, compared with $50 an hour at Chrysler, $56 at Ford and $58 at GM, according to the Center for Automotive Research, a nonprofit research group.

The federal Canadian and Ontario province governments worked in tandem with the U.S. government on auto bailouts in 2009 to maintain Canada's share of North American auto production. Canada's share peaked at 3.2 million cars in 1999, about 17.4 percent of North American production. In 2011, Canada produced 2.1 million vehicles, or about 16 percent.

SpaceX, NASA target Oct. 7 launch for resupply mission to International Space Station

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? NASA managers, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) officials and international partner representatives Thursday announced Sunday, Oct. 7, as the target launch date for the first contracted cargo resupply flight to the International Space Station under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract.

International Space Station Program managers confirmed the status and readiness of the Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon cargo spacecraft for the SpaceX CRS-1 mission, as well as the space station's readiness to receive Dragon.

Launch is scheduled for 8:34 p.m. EDT from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. A back up launch opportunity is available on Oct. 8.

The launch of the Dragon spacecraft will be the first of 12 contracted flights by SpaceX to resupply the space station and marks the second trip by a Dragon to the station, following a successful demonstration mission in May. SpaceX services under the CRS contract will restore an American capability to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo, including science experiments, to the orbiting laboratory -- a feat not achievable since the retirement of the space shuttle.

The Dragon will be filled with about 1,000 pounds of supplies. This includes critical materials to support the 166 investigations planned for the station's Expedition 33 crew, including 63 new investigations. The Dragon will return about 734 pounds of scientific materials, including results from human research, biotechnology, materials and educational experiments, as well as about 504 pounds of space station hardware.

Materials being launched on Dragon will support experiments in plant cell biology, human biotechnology and various materials technology demonstrations, among others. One experiment, called Micro 6, will examine the effects of microgravity on the opportunistic yeast Candida albicans, which is present on all humans. Another experiment, called Resist Tubule, will evaluate how microgravity affects the growth of cell walls in a plant called Arabidopsis. About 50 percent of the energy expended by terrestrial-bound plants is dedicated to structural support to overcome gravity. Understanding how the genes that control this energy expenditure operate in microgravity could have implications for future genetically modified plants and food supply. Both Micro 6 and Resist Tubule will return with the Dragon at the end of its mission.

Expedition 33 Commander Sunita Williams of NASA and Aki Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency will use a robot arm to grapple the Dragon following its rendezvous with the station on Wednesday, Oct. 10. They will attach the Dragon to the Earth-facing port of the station's Harmony module for a few weeks while crew members unload cargo and load experiment samples for return to Earth.

Dragon is scheduled to return in late October for a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern California.

While NASA works with U.S. industry partners to develop commercial spaceflight capabilities, the agency also is developing the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS), a crew capsule and heavy-lift rocket to provide an entirely new capability for human exploration. Designed to be flexible for launching spacecraft for crew and cargo missions, SLS and Orion will expand human presence beyond low Earth orbit and enable new missions of exploration across the solar system.

Conference 2012: Raising the profile of food and drink manufacturing

Bookmark and Share

This party conference season the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) will be promoting the work of the UK?s largest manufacturing sector and our 20/20 Vision of 20% sustainable growth by 2020. With a turnover of ?76.7bn, our industry has continued to grow throughout the economic downturn, and we plan to use this conference season to consult delegates and identify how we can continue to this success.

Did you know that the UK?s food and drink manufacturers buy two thirds of all the UK?s agricultural produce? This is why we will be teaming up with the NFU again, and guest Chair Julia Glotz from The Grocer, to host events at the Liberal Democrat and Labour Party conferences. The ?Food and Farming Debate? is the theme for Liberal Democrats with Food and Farming Minister David Heath MP, Tim Farron MP and Baroness Parminter. At Labour we will discuss ?How can research and development deliver affordable food security?? with Mary Creagh MP and Huw Irranca-Davies MP.

We will also be raising the profile of manufacturing and its importance to the UK?s future economic growth. Together with EEF and the Fabian Society we plan to thrash out the topic ?Going for Growth: The new relationship between Government and the economy? at two roundtable events with speakers Lord Razzall and Vicky Pryce at the Liberal Democrat and Lord Adonis at Labour Party Conference.

Finally at Conservative conference our focus will be on green growth, when we host a dinner with guest speaker Owen Paterson, Secretary of State for Environment Food and Rural Affairs. Sustainable growth remains core to everything we do and we are committed achieving a better quality of life for everyone, now and for future generations to come.

To find out more about FDF and our conference events visit www.fdf.org.uk or contact us at parliament@fdf.org.uk

During the Party conferences we will be 'tweeting' about the latest from our fringe events ? @Foodanddrinkfed #fdfpartyconf.

A Ray of Hope

Every day until the election, Slate will offer up one reason to be optimistic for your candidate.

With the candidates effectively tied in Nevada, Romney may yet be able to count on the state?s Mormon voters to tip the state red. Church officials recently embarked on a voter registration drive which, while technically nonpartisan, reminds Mormons to speak ?with one voice? politically. And with 74 percent of Mormons identifying as Republican-leaning, there?s little doubt about what that ?one voice? will be saying. A successful mobilization of Mormon voters, combined with an ever-rising unemployment rate, could help Nevada swing Romney?s way.

University of Houston students turn to illegal drug use under ...

By: Audris Ponce, Beatriz Ramirez and Lawrence Barajas
The Venture

With all of the pressure to succeed in class and their social life, college students have turned to the drug Adderall to stay focused enough to get good grades.

?My focus has sharply achieved total undivided attention to whatever subject I desire,? said a premed student at the University of Houston who asked to remain anonymous. ?Whether it is delusional or not, my desire to study and focus has increased, wanting to do so versus doing so is distinctive.?

While some students use this medication for academic purposes, the intended use of Adderall is to treat ADD or ADHD, a behavioral disorder characterized by the inability to pay attention, hyperactivity and impulsive actions.

Adderall, a combination of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine, is a central nervous system stimulant that affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.

For those who have ADD, Adderall helps them pay attention and sit still. When someone without ADD or ADHD uses Adderall, they experience an enhancement of their ability to concentrate on a specific task for an extended period of time and experience a greater sense of motivation.

A college student?s life consists of a heavy course load, low quantities of sleep, working part time to cover tuition and they are still expected to maintain a respectable GPA. Whenever a big test is coming up or a fifteen-page paper is due and an all-nighter is required, the use of Adderall has become necessary to those who wish to do it all, according to students who use the drug.

Students who are determined to overcome challenges they feel they could not overcome without the drug believe that the risks are nonexistent. For some users, it is only till afterwards that they realize the damaged caused by Adderall.

?My appetite has decreased not allowing me to eat my normal diet. It creates difficulty sleeping under the effects as well. Overall, it lowers fatigue and anxiety. My blood pressure increases a slight bit and induces me to urinate more, as is the diuretic effect of the medicine,? the pre-med student said. ?When I do exercises it allows me to push further than I would normally do so, occasionally it causes stomach cramps, but I have to say it creates the perfect studying environment.?

Romney stepping up pace of campaign in battleground states

MIAMI (Reuters) - Mitt Romney is planning to increase the pace of his public campaign events in battleground states as he tries to move past one of the most difficult weeks of his Republican presidential campaign.

During a week in which his campaign has faced infighting and a secret video came to light that made Romney appear like he was writing off nearly half the voting public, the Republican has mostly appeared at fund-raising events in states that are not in doubt -- Democratic-heavy California and the Republican stronghold of Texas.

That will soon change as Romney ramps up his schedule for the last seven weeks of campaigning. Polls show a close race with Obama holding a narrow lead in the race to the November 6 election, and some Republicans have complained that Romney did not appear to be campaigning enough.

Romney aides said that sometimes he will hold three public events a day, which in most election years is a normal pace in the final stretch to election day but for Romney will be a big increase.

As part of the stepped-up schedule, Romney will participate in a three-day bus tour of Ohio next week with his vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, campaign aides said.

It would be difficult for Romney to win the White House without victory in Ohio and Florida, and both states represent challenges. The unemployment rate in Midwestern Ohio is better than the national average of 8.1 percent.

And in retiree-heavy Florida, Romney faces headwinds over a plan championed by Romney's vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, to change the Medicare health insurance plan for seniors.

A Ryan budget blueprint would save money by changing the way Medicare works. It has given Democrats a line of attack against the Republican ticket.

On Thursday in Sarasota, Romney will seek to reassure seniors that his budget-cutting proposals would not affect their retirement benefits.

At the same time, a new Romney TV ad will feature Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio arguing Romney's plans would not affect them.

Romney wants the election to be a referendum on Obama's handling of the weak U.S. economy, but self-inflicted wounds have sidetracked him this week. A secretly recorded video that surfaced on Monday suggested he was writing off Obama supporters as people dependent on government with no sense of personal responsibility.

"My campaign is about the 100 percent in America and I'm concerned about them," Romney said in an interview with the Spanish-language Univision network in Miami on Wednesday.

"I'm concerned about the fact that over the past four years life has become harder for Americans. More people have fallen into poverty, more people we just learned have had to go onto food stamps," he added.

Some 43 percent of registered voters thought less of Romney after seeing the video, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, while a mostly Republican 26 percent viewed him more favorably. Independent voters were more likely to say the video lowered their opinion of Romney.

Romney hopes to recover by framing the presidential election as a choice between big government and economic growth.
